The Sturgeon Moon

The Sturgeon moon is August’s full moon and tonight is the night it will be at its fullest so I thought we’d have a closer look at it.

The Full Moon’s Name

As with many of the names of the full moons, this is a colonial name taken from the Native American name. This full moon is named the Sturgeon moon after the huge amounts of Sturgeon fish that could be found in the great lakes in America around this time of year and was an important food source at this time for the Native Americans.

The sturgeon are now endangered due to overfishing and water pollution, so perhaps we could use this moon to remember the importance of taking care of wildlife and our rivers and lakes.

Other Names For The Sturgeon Moon

There are other names for this moon though, some that I must admit I like far better. One of the English names for this moon is the Corn Moon, another is Lightning Moon as there can be a lot of thunder storms here at this time of year.

The Anglo-saxon name is the Grain Moon, because the first harvests start around now, as with the celebration of Lughnasadh and Lammas. The Celts called it Lynx Moon or Dispute Moon.

Other names include: Ricing Moon, Black Cherries Moon, Flying Up Moon, Red Moon, Herbal Moon, Fruit Moon, and Mountain Shadows Moon.

When To See The Sturgeon Moon

The Sturgeon Moon will rise at around 9pm ish here in the UK, varying slightly depending on your location and it won’t rise very high above the horizon so you are likely to witness a moon illusion. This is where the moon appears to be much bigger than normal.

Symbolism Of The Sturgeon Moon

This full moon symbolises resilience, strength, spiritual connection, spiritual awakening, and perseverance.

It is seen as a time for gratitude, appreciating the abundance in your life, releasing old emotional patterns, connecting with and finding harmony with nature.

It is also a time of ancient wisdom and traditions and is a great time to honour ancestors.

I’ll be adding more to this post as and when I find any interesting little bits of information or when I think of something I’d like to add.
